The beta site for a national digital library for ethics in science and engineering was an 18-month project that explored the use of digital repositories to compile and disseminate materials for ethics in science and engineering. The ESENCe site on ScholarWorks@UMass Amherst represents the materials collected during that time. A new site for materials related to ethics in science and engineering will be developed at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, (NSF SES 1045412).
ESENCe was a direct response to the America COMPETES Act, which, since January 4, 2010, requires "that each institution that applies for financial assistance from the Foundation for science and engineering research or education describe in its grant proposal a plan to provide appropriate training and oversight in the responsible and ethical conduct of research to undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers participating in the proposed research project" (Section 7009) and "that all grant applications that include funding to support postdoctoral researchers include a description of the mentoring activities that will be provided for such individuals" (Section 7008).
Administrative Project SiteFunding for this project comes from the National Science Foundation through grant number 0936857. Any opinions, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed here are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.
