Abstract

Applications for preliminary permits to reactivate three defunct hydroelectric plants located on the Kalamazoo River, Michigan, initiated an environmental review. The review concluded that depressed dissolved oxygen and exacerbation of PCB contamination will occur if the hydroelectric plants are reactivated. Fish communities are presently dominated by carp in the reach occupied by the three hydroelectric plants. Benefits to sport fishing generated by dam removal and fish population restructuring exceed benefits of electrical production.
