Abstract
There have been ideas to combine a fishway and a boat channel in sites with small space to take the advantages of both passage types. This article describes the results of research on a model which has been used to study the design for such a fishway/boat channel combination which will be built in the summer of 1996 in Finland. The shape of the channel to be constructed is a truncated V-shape. The actual water channel itself is 15 m long, 3 m wide at the top, and 1.5 m wide at the bottom. Baffles are located on the sides and bottom of the channel at a 45º angle to the bottom. The shape of the baffles reduces the water velocities on the sides and bottom of the channel by reflecting the water current back on itself. This means that the highest water velocity is in the center, in the upper half of the channel. This permits fish to swim either in those areas where the water velocity is low (i.e. the bottom and near the sides of the channel) or in the center of the channel where the water velocity is high. In addition, the design will permit small boats to navigate in the center of the channel without hitting the sides.
