Kinesiology

Department Chair: Catrine Tudor-Locke

The mission of the Department of Kinesiology is to generate new knowledge and educate society, within and beyond the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as to the scientific principles that underlie the role of movement in attaining optimal human health and well-being. By our study of the structural and functional interactions between movement and health, we will promote the understanding of benefits of physical activity, provide high quality education for undergraduate and graduate students, extend the boundaries of knowledge through innovative and integrative research, and translate research results to practical applications beneficial to society.

In May 2006, our name changed to Kinesiology from the Department of Exercise Science which was the first of its kind in the country. Many of our scholars and researchers now conduct their work in areas that are better defined as the Science of Human Movement. Thus, Kinesiology better denotes the field of study pursued by faculty in our field.
