Academic libraries of all sizes can and must strategically position themselves to capture, manage, and disseminate the digital scholarship of their respective institutions. There are many new opportunities and challenges that these roles are providing for librarians in their relationships with faculty and other members of the campus community. Our discussion topics will include how the liaisons are participating in engaged discussions with the faculty about how to manage rights to their scholarly articles and creative works, describe services provided by our institutional repository (ScholarWorks@UMass Amherst) and how this has facilitated new partnerships, describe librarians’ active role in creating data management plans with faculty, and most recently how librarians and library staff have become involved as key partners in our new Open Education Initiative, a partnership between the University Libraries and the Office of the Provost. We will end with an engaged discussion as we look to our future possibilities.

Digital repositories are new tools for documenting the accumulated scholarly work produced at academic institutions and disseminating that material broadly via the internet. Digital repositories support all file types and can be adapted to meet the custom design specifications of individual institutions. A section for community engagement initiatives was created within ScholarWorks@UMass Amherst, the digital repository for University of Massachusetts Amherst. Collected materials can provide a comprehensive record of partnerships, results, and products that advance institutional goals while facilitating the development of individual academic portfolios. This innovative application of library science allows community engagement to be appropriately valued as the central organizing component of diverse academic activities.

In this third webinar, we discussed and shared opportunities for engagement in professional library organizations and other groups which might provide a forum to share sustainability best practices such as discussion groups, task forces, committees and social activities. Participants shared their experiences with tools such as LinkedIn and listservs, organizations such as AASHE, ARL, ACRL, as well as state and regional associations. We talked about how to initiate contact with such groups, where to focus and how to address the diverse needs of libraries in all sectors: public, academic, school, special and other. Specific recommendations for successful sustainability activities within professional library organizations was offered within the group's discussion. There will be the option for a group to convene in another virtual room for an ALA-focused discussion — in particular, the future of Task Force on the Environment (TFOE). Plans are already underway for a face-to-face social gathering at the upcoming ALA Annual conference to consider how to best advance the sustainability message within our libraries and associations.
