These events, open to the public, include jazz, orchestral, wind, vocal and percussion music, and ballet, jazz and modern dance.

The Department is committed to:

  • Providing the finest music education possible within a culture of innovation, creativity, and experimentation.
  • Achieving national prominence in scholarly and creative activity.
  • Catalyzing the quality of life in the community, the Commonwealth, and the region.
  • Expanding and increasing collaborative efforts on the campus, among the Five Colleges, and with arts organizations in the Commonwealth, the region, and the nation.

The Department achieves this mission through the highest quality solo and ensemble performances, teaching, creative activities, and research activities. These activities, in particular the ensemble performances, are important aspects of the public's perception of university quality.
