Development of a Pediatric Depression Healthcare Toolkit

Abstract
Background: Depression is a debilitating and life-threatening disease that strongly affects youth in the United States. Low socioeconomic populations often have high-risk factors for depression, low health literacy, and poor access to care. Risk factors are amplified for those who identify as gender non-binary or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ). Psychoeducation can empower youth to be active participants within their treatment. Purpose: The focus of this project was to evaluate a newly developed healthcare toolkit for pediatric depression in the format of an eBook for mental health professionals. Methods: An eBook focusing on depression pathology, symptoms and treatment was developed and posted online to be accessible to mental health professionals to use with their patients with an attached voluntary survey. The survey evaluated usefulness, efficacy, and feedback of the eBook. Open-ended questions were organized into themes, and SPSS was be utilized to analyze quantitative data from the Likert scale. Results: The majority of participants reported the eBook. to be helpful, informative and agreed to use this eBook with their patients. Qualitative feedback for improvement included themes of formatting, helpfulness, and developmental appropriateness. Conclusion: Mental health professionals play a key role in supporting youth with depression. Mental health professionals found this eBook to be a valuable and helpful tool to use in their practice.
