Teaching

The Tan Brook Freshwater Sustainability Project is not just limited to organizing research efforts, it also hopes to encourage the use of the Tan Brook as a teaching resource for Amherst and UMass. The Brook is piped underground past the Elementary and High Schools, as well as through the grounds of UMass Amherst. Its proximity to both teaching environments makes it an ideal candidate as an active learning tool that could spark interest in ecology or other sciences. We hope the Project will eventually grow to use the stream as a visible lesson for students and a way for students to get outside and actively learning. This could apply to a basic high school biology course or an ecology course at a local college; the Project welcomes creative new ways to educate students.
