In 1976 the Area Studies Programs within the International Programs Office, University of Massachusetts, Amherst initiated a series of Occasional Papers to provide an outlet for informal scholarly works of a general interest to the University and Five College communities. The first numbers in this series devoted to issues and themes in an Asian context were introduced in 1978 under the sponsorship of the Asian Studies Committee. These initial papers dealt with topics in history, literature and development focused on Japan, China and Laos. It is expected that future numbers in this series may include a variety of topical and disciplinary studies focusing on East, South and Southeast Asia.
