Session Description

The Pioneer Valley Biochar Initiative, host of the 2013 USBI North American Biochar Symposium, will offer a Video Lounge in the Reading Room of the Campus Center at UMass Amherst – free and open to the public. Ted Talks, feature films and a variety of carefully selected YouTube videos will run from Sunday evening 6-9pm, Monday and Tuesday from 9am until 9pm and Wednesday from 9am until 3pm, October 13-16.

Why host a Video Lounge at UMass Amherst during this Biochar conference?

Video is one of the most powerful educational mediums of our time and because Biochar is not yet a substance widely understood and used, we want to cultivate as many Biochar enthusiasts in our local community and beyond as possible.

Who are the people and organizations ideally suited to realize the benefits of Biochar?

Anyone interested in soil will be enriched through the Video Lounge. And anyone who wants to grow nutritious food, sequester carbon from the atmosphere, or perhaps be in a position to utilize the filtration and remineralization properties of Biochar will benefit from this educational event.

The Benefits & Uses of Biochar is one of the four tracks of the symposium, featuring published research on topics ranging from habitat restoration and heavy metal remediation to livestock nutrition and manure management. Farmers, gardeners and landscapers are using biochar to sustain soil and plant health; waste management and remediation organizations are using biochar to remove toxins from drinking water and eco systems threatened by pollution.
