Doris Hamill will describe the K-12 biochar educational package she and her team launched at NASA, where it has taken off and where it may land. She will also share details about her project for using biochar in the redevelopment project on the Hampton Roads campus.

Bio and Photo

Doris Hamill has spent her career managing the development of leading edge aerospace technology. She is currently a technology development manager for NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. She began her career as an Air Force officer at the Air Force’s School of Aerospace Medicine then the Rome Air Development Center. As a civilian, she worked as a program manager for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. She also worked in industry, first on life support systems with Oceaneering Space Systems then on microgravity research business development with SpaceHab, a commercial space company. At NASA Langley, she has had a breadth of assignments supporting Mars entry technology, unmanned aerial vehicles, solar powered aircraft, and projects of joint interest to NASA and the military. She holds a B.S. in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and an M.S. in Engineering Biophysics from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Thomas R. Miles has been the principal of T.R. Miles Technical Consultants, Portland, Oregon, since 1997. He has designed, developed, installed and tested agricultural and industrial systems for fuel handling, air quality, and biomass energy since 1975. He is an expert in combustion and gasification of biomass fuels such as wood, straws, stalks and manures. Fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French he has worked and studied in several countries. In the 1970s he worked on early development of emissions and efficiency standards for domestic heating appliances. Since 1994 he has been the principal sponsor and host of the imporved cooking stoves discussions and websites on CREST/REPP and Bioeneryglists.org. He also sponsors and hosts internet sites and discussions about biomass energy including gasification and conversion to biochar. www.bioenergylists.org
