Doing Participatory Research: A Feminist Approach

Patricia Maguire

Abstract

The author uncovers the biases of traditional research by engaging in participatory research with a group of abused women in Gallup, New Mexico. She uses Paulo Freire’s concept of dialogue to talk with the women, transcribes the interviews and presents the women in their own words as they move through a cycle of reflection and action to answer how to move forward in their lives after living with violent men. This creative work will involve the reader in both theory and practice.
