Design and performance modeling of wireless networks

Benyuan Liu, University of Massachusetts Amherst

Abstract

Mobile and wireless networks have been undergoing tremendous growth during the past few years. Many new applications and services have started to emerge. These technologies have significantly transformed many aspects of our society and everyday life. We expect that the growth will continue for years to come. The inherent characteristics of mobile and wireless networks, such as limited bandwidth and battery power, high interference and noise level, and error-prone channels, pose great challenges to the performance of wireless networks. The goal of this thesis is to understand, characterize, and provide effective solutions to improve the performance of wireless networks. In this thesis, we first study the coverage problems of large-scale wireless sensor networks. We introduce several fundamental measures of sensor network coverage and characterize them under different network scenarios. Next, we study the data transport capacity of wireless networks. We characterize the throughput capacity of hybrid wireless networks under two different routing strategies, and investigate the benefit of forming hybrid wireless networks to improving the throughput capacity of wireless ad hoc networks. Last, we study the reliable data transport in wireless networks. We propose an approach to improve TCP performance in wireless networks, using a cross-layer coupling scheme that combines TCP performance characterization and physical layer forward error correction. Simulation results show that our approach significantly improves TCP performance in wireless network over a wide range of channel conditions.
