Abstract
Social scientist Kingsley Davis underestimated the potential of collective efforts to modify patriarchal authority relations in his Jul 1937 article on declining birth rates, the future of the family, fertility behavior and related public policies. A theoretical framework between production and reproduction concerns should be integrated with a moral concept of what the family could and should become. Social scientists are urged to appreciate and take responsibility for the transformation of authority relations between men and women, parents and children, rich and poor, old and young.
