Nicholas McBride, associate professor, earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1976, and a master’s degree from the School of Journalism at Columbia University in 1986. He also holds a master’s degree in education from Harvard University (1990). He has been a reporter for the Springfield Daily News, Washington Post, Afro-American, and Christian Science Monitor (Washington Bureau). McBride received the Distinguished Teaching Award for 2004-2005 in recognition of outstanding teaching accomplishments. In 2005, he was also a Fellow at the Center for Teaching participating in a year long program studying ways to implement a pedagogy of diversity. In 2006-07, he served as a Community Service Fellow developing curriculum in journalism learning and practice with urban high school students and undergraduates. McBride’s courses include newswriting, the philosophy of journalism, community journalism, and covering race. He also teaches the Dean’s Book Honors Course.
During the 2011-2012 school year, McBride was awarded both the SBS College Outstanding Teacher award and the Distinguished Academic Outreach Award for Outreach in Teaching.
