Abstract
This project explores the synergies between Western and Indigenous perspectives on food as medicine in the U.S., acknowledging Indigenous communities as guardians of ancestral knowledge surrounding the recent western surge of interest in this longstanding movement. Utilizing the Two-Eyed Seeing approach and looking specifically at local food procurement, it analyzes interventions like produce prescriptions and culturally relevant foods in clinical and community-based settings. Methodologically, this project utilizes virtual learning circles, a steering committee, and panel interviews with producers and practitioners. The results identify a gap in addressing root causes of challenges like food insecurity and advocate for a holistic Two-Eyed Seeing approach moving forward. The project aims to bridge perspectives, emphasizing sustainability and community well-being in shaping strategies for health and wellness. Its significance lies in challenging the emphasis on temporary solutions and underrepresentation of Indigenous perspectives in food as medicine and advocates for a more inclusive and effective approach.
