Abstract
I chose Sustainable Tourism because travel has been a transformational journey of growth for me as an international student. It has shaped my perspectives and broadened the scope of my heart and imagination. Sustainable Tourism grounds a balance between environmental, social, and economic impacts. Environmentally, it has an important footprint around the world, so green and good practices like renewable energy, balanced use of resources and smart policies are fundamental. Socially, it is culturally enriching as diversity comes to place and diminishes social barriers historically strengthened by stereotypes. It also contributes to the wellbeing of several communities worldwide if well managed. Economically, sustainable investment and management are key edges for broadening impacts and advancing in the proliferation of value-added jobs that promote education, innovation, and connection. For me, promoting ideas, initiatives, perspectives, and opportunities from expert voices of the industry and related fields of study, like anthropology and environmental studies, is elemental in the process of aligning to the UN SDGs. Podcasts have been an important part of my life for a long time. When I lived in Ecuador, I listened to several podcasts in English to practice the language and learn new things. Now that I live in the US, podcasts have become an important element for me to be enlightened with enriching conversations in my mother tongue, as I feel that I can be close to home and participate in interactions of my interest everywhere I go. These conversations are valuable for people as they can listen to advice from the UN Tourism Executive Director (which I had the pleasure to interview for this project!) while they are washing the dishes. I recorded episodes in English and Spanish to broad the scope of these ideas and contribute to Latin America in the aim of bringing valuable entrepreneurship and contributions to the table. All this, with the aim of democratizing what I was privileged to learn.
