Abstract
In Spring 1999, nine New England Greenway Vision Planning (NEGVP) workshops revealed a shared interest among greenway advocates and professionals in forming a regional greenway consortium. This study marks the initial phase in the development of the New England Greenway Consortium, envisioned as an information clearinghouse and coordinating body for greenway initiatives across the region. A five-question survey was distributed to 232 public decision-makers and greenway professionals to explore foundational organizational concerns, including communication methods, leadership structures, and potential roles of the Consortium. With a response rate of 14.8% (33 participants), the majority expressed willingness to host meetings (58%) and serve on committees (67%). Most respondents supported regular meetings, with nearly half open to quarterly gatherings. They envisioned the Consortium fulfilling roles in information sharing, lobbying, public relations, planning, and land acquisition prioritization. Key recommended next steps for establishing the Consortium include crafting a mission statement, launching a quarterly online newsletter, organizing annual meetings, expanding the membership database, and identifying funding sources.
