A survey of fish transportation equipment and techniques was conducted. Two hundred forty-one survey forms of the approximately 1,100 distributed were returned from fish hatcheries, private producers, Indian reservations, and research laboratories in 36 states and four Canadian provinces. Sixty-one species and hybrids were reportedly transported. Five species represented 50% of the reported hauls. Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), walleye (Stizostedion vitreum), and bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) were those most frequently hauled. Most fish-hauling tanks in use were commercially produced (68%) and were mounted on trucks (70%). Most held 101-200 gal of water and fish (35%), were fiberglass (35%), and were rectangular boxes in form (75%). Oxygen was most frequently used for aeration (83%), and bottled oxygen gas was the most common form (91%). Agitators of various types were used by 70% of those who use oxygen. Several unique and novel tank designs were reported.
