Should I stay or should I go? Place detachment in the face of overtourism

Citations
Abstract
Overtourism has become a major issue worldwide and will remain a key issue for local residents, tourism actors and local authorities in years to come. Whilst academics have researched tourism impacts for decades, overtourism is more complex and its various consequences have been met by a fierce opposition from local residents in various destinations. This paper aims to revisit older models of tourism impacts to provide a more detailed approach of the overtourism stages and its associated consequences. It details the shock wave that overtourism represents for local populations and how this process gradually pushes them away from their place of daily living. The research also investigates residents who have made the conscious choice to move away from their destination, explaining how place detachment occurs and its main causes.
