Toward A Sub-Model for Ecosystem Stability in the Natural Resource Planning Program

Citations
Abstract
The Natural Resource Planning Program (NRPP), developed by the USDA Soil Conservation Service in 1974, proposes a comprehensive methodology for assessing the quality of a community's natural resource environment through a landscape assessment model. This model applies a numerical rating scale to evaluate environmental conditions based on four key parameters: health, ecosystem stability, opportunities for outdoor recreation, and aesthetics. These parameters reflect standards considered vital by community members. This study specifically focuses on re-evaluating the "ecosystem stability" parameter within the NRPP model. It aims to refine the theoretical understanding of ecosystem stability and construct a sub-model to assess how land use practices and resource management influence ecological balance. By doing so, the study enhances the model’s ability to identify natural resource surpluses and deficiencies and to support informed land use planning and environmental management decisions at the community level.
