This paper presents a regional review of the status of fish passage technology and issues of East Asian countries, focusing on the China, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan. Literature surveys and discussions with fish passage scientists were made in these countries. Field observations were also carried out in Taiwan and Japan. The present condition of installed fishways and screens is summarized with the background, such as the major migrant species of each country. A discussion about the need for screens and bypasses is also included with the attitudes that prevent them from being built.
