Respecting Small Moments: An Exploration of Intra-actions in Early Literacy
Citations
Abstract
Educational research focused on early literacy often overlooks how small moments of experience support a child’s engagement with the world. Recent work situated in more-than-human conceptualizations of meaning making has inspired others to look at literacy as a boundless, dynamic, and interpretive practice. In acknowledging such a perspective and trying to better understand what children are already doing with their literacies, their experiences are valued and given space to flourish. Children, even at the youngest of ages, are already acting upon their world in very meaningful ways. It is the responsibility of adults in control of resources to notice.
This research explores early literacy as an experiential practice connecting humans to the environment in meaningful ways. Taking a position of parent ethnographer, my research focuses on everyday literacy intra-actions of my daughter and how these experiences can support future engagements. Through patchwork ethnography over the course of one year, small moments of my daughter’s everyday literacy were highlighted in relation to more-than-human understandings of intra-action. This work contributes to conversations around early literacy research and advocates for reflection on the impact of small moments that may sometimes go unnoticed.
