An Investigation of Possible Enviromental Consequences Resulting from the Development of Oil Shale Resources in Northwestern Colorado

Citations
Abstract
This study explores the dynamic relationship between living organisms and their environment, emphasizing how human activity can significantly alter natural systems, often with known consequences. As population growth accelerates and land use intensifies, there is a growing recognition of how current actions affect future land capability. A key focus of this paper is the environmental impact of developing oil shale resources—sedimentary rocks rich in hydrocarbons. Although commonly referred to as "oil shale," the material is more accurately classified as marlstone, containing kerogen, a solid organic compound that is difficult to extract. The paper examines the potential environmental consequences of oil shale extraction, including land degradation, ecosystem disruption, and resource depletion, highlighting the need for careful consideration in energy resource development, especially in remote or ecologically sensitive areas.
