How to Tell the Story with Light: The Lighting Design Process of The Hatmaker's Wife by Lauren Yee

Abstract
This thesis document concerns my lighting design process for the Fall 2023 production of Lauren Yee’s The Hatmaker’s Wife. I aimed to articulate my approach to lighting design as a storyteller. Design, for me, is a process of reading, understanding, and developing a unique perspective on how best to convey the narrative. The choices made in lighting design reflect how I interpret the play's world and what I aim to communicate on stage. I pose numerous questions during the design process: What is the core message of the story? How do I intend to communicate it? In the realm of lighting, the selection of direction, color, quality, and angle of light visually uncovers the layers of the storytelling. Additionally, the moments of light changes, the reasons behind these light cues, and the resulting visual impact are integral components that contribute to the storytelling process. Lighting design is like a subtle language I use to tell the story of the play visually.
