Canoe Meadows: Massachusetts Audubon Sanctuary, Pittsfield: A Design for A Fragile Landscape

Citations
Abstract
This study focuses on developing a design proposal and management strategy for Canoe Meadows, a 218-acre ecologically sensitive site along the Housatonic River in western Massachusetts. As an Audubon sanctuary and wildlife conservation area, Canoe Meadows balances the preservation of its natural and cultural features with increasing demands for environmental education and public use. The project aims to minimize site disturbance and visual impact while maximizing user access and appreciation through thoughtful design solutions. The process involves comprehensive site analysis, program development in collaboration with Massachusetts Audubon, conceptual planning, and detailed design proposals. The ultimate goal is to create a sustainable framework for site management that supports passive recreation and education, ensuring the long-term protection of this fragile landscape.
