The ongoing water crisis in the Horn of Africa

Citations
Abstract
Tension has been growing between Ethiopia and Egypt over the past few decades, with the threat of war currently looming over the Horn of Africa. The crisis is caused by the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a massive structure that is costing billions to create. The GERD stands over 500 feet tall (152 meters), has multiple spillways that amount to 1.1 miles (1.77 kilometers) in width, and will have a reservoir of 74 billion cubic meters (BCM) or 2,613 billion cubic feet. This blocks the natural flow of the Blue Nile River and consequently exacerbates the water deficit of riparian countries in the Nile Basin (NBI, 2021).
