Abstract
This thesis aims to discuss the reasons why Higashino Keigo is more popular in China than in America as a mystery fiction writer. It also contains the translation of two short stories from the novel Dokusho Shosetsu (A Novel of Poisonous Humor) written by Higashino Keigo. I translated the stories Kidnapping Heaven and The Bridegroom Doll and analyzed the Japanese social problems in the stories as well as the writing style of Higashino to display the reasons related to the popularity of Higashino. I also consult Chinese mystery history, interview a person in the publishing industry, and examine the comments from readers to look for the reasons. After collecting all kinds of information, I conclude that the lack of mystery fiction development in China and the similar situation between Japanese society and Chinese society are two factors that influence the popularity of Higashino. The competition in the publishing industry and different reading tastes are the other two factors that affect the popularity of Higashino.
