Abstract
Do virtual and hybrid events have similar outcomes as face-to-face meetings for professional development in the tourism sector? Between 2020 and 2022, the Global Agritourism Network offered a series of 18 webinars as well as a hybrid conference with in-person and virtual attendees. We surveyed attendees and analyzed respondents’ stated benefits and accomplishments resulting from their participation. We found two main takeaways: First, in-person and virtual educational programs were equally effective at helping participants build knowledge, access resources, and meet professional development needs. Second, attending the conference in person was much more effective for networking and community-building. Based on these findings, we suggest frequent virtual events and regional in-person networking activities, with periodic global in-person and hybrid gatherings opportunities. While the results are specific to the Global Agritourism Network, future research can assess transferability to other sectors of the tourism industry.
