Abstract
Intensive fish culture operations, especially those incorporating temperature control systems to enhance growth rates and pure oxygen injection devices to increase culture densities, require continual and accurate allocation of inputs in order to operate efficiently. Management of culture space, feed, oxygen, water, and thermal resources is complex, dynamic, interdependent, and of direct economic importance. The field of physiological energetics provides a highly useful framework of mathematical relationships between metabolism, growth, and feeding that can be used to predict the outcome of various management strategies. The use of energetic concepts to manage a commercial intensive culture system resulted in the application of a mathematical management model, which is presented in this paper.
