New deadline for submissions: Dec 17th, 2023

After the very successful HLAW 1 at the University of Lisbon in 2022, the Heritage Languages Around the World 2 (HLAW2) conference will be held at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from May 29th to 31st, 2024. This is a joint initiative of the Portuguese and Brazilian Studies Program and the Hispanic Linguistics Program at UMass Amherst together with the Centro de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa, the Centro de Estudos Humanísticos da Universidade do Minho, and the Portuguese Program at UMass Dartmouth. This initiative is also supported by Camões Institute through the Lydia Jorge Chair in Portuguese Studies at UMass Amherst.

We welcome submissions on the following areas:

  1. Linguistic properties of heritage languages in child and adult bilinguals
  2. The role of input and cross-linguistic influence in heritage language acquisition
  3. Research methods in heritage language development
  4. Understudied heritage languages (e.g. Native American, African and Asian languages)
  5. New trends in heritage language education
  6. Heritage language policies
  7. Attitudes and identity in heritage languages
  8. Heritage languages and the preservation of linguistic diversity

Important dates:

  • New Deadline: December 17th, 2023
  • Notification of acceptance: January 31st, 2024
