Abstract
To begin the presentation (10 minutes), we will provide background on the Higher Education Incentive Fund (HEIF) grant received by Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 2021, which involved 16 faculty (both full- and part-time, from varied departments) taking a 10-week, 5-module course, entitled Inclusive Teaching for Equitable Learning; then participating in a cultural competency workshop; and ultimately working in groups to produce OERs that were inclusive and equitable. Attendees will be split into groups/pairs in separate chat rooms to examine one of the 6 brief OERs produced through the HEIF grant, and address a series of prompts relating to inclusive and equitable practices (15 minutes). Prompts will include: What makes this OER inclusive/equitable? What could make it more inclusive/equitable? Are there any elements that are not inclusive/equitable? Participants will be asked to give at least one answer to each prompt and will be given guidelines for how long to spend examining the OER and how long to discuss it. Participants will be asked to record their impressions on Google Jam boards and use them when reporting out to the larger group. Attendees will then come together to report out and discuss their findings (15 minutes). Presenters will then share what the authors of the OERs felt was inclusive and equitable about their submissions. Q&A will be intertwined in the discussion and participants can expect to take away ideas for how to approach OER design using an equity lens.
