Session Abstract

During the 2021-22 academic year, Massasoit Community College librarians embarked on creating a remix of the OER textbook "Introduction to College Research." This presentation explores the value of using an OER text to supplement one-shot library instruction and addresses the timeline and commitment of creating and remixing OER content. It will also highlight methods and approaches to training writing faculty on the use of the OER within a specific writing course.

Objectives of the Session

1. Attendees will have a complete understanding of the OER text presented.

2. Attendees will have the opportunity to assess their own timelines and workload for an OER project.

3. Attendees will discuss and explore ways to provide learning opportunities to assist faculty for course adoption of an OER text.

Full Description of the Session

During the 2021-22 academic year, Massasoit Community College librarians embarked on creating a remix of the OER textbook "Introduction to College Research." The intention of adopting the textbook was to produce a new, semester-long asynchronous model of library instruction. By eliminating the time constraints of one-shot instruction, a wider variety of information literacy topics could be covered, related to both students’ academic careers and everyday lives. This was a detailed project with an extended timeline, as all librarians involved were new to the creation and editing process of an OER.

Librarians chose to target English department faculty for the OER adoption as English Composition I is a required course for all students which also accounts for a number of library instruction sessions. This provided the largest possible audience of learners early on in their academic career. Librarians worked closely with English faculty to create learning and training opportunities for incorporating the OER into the introductory writing class. This presentation will outline the timeline for the OER project as well as discuss faculty development around issues of OER and Information Literacy. Plans for assessment and discussion of faculty experience will also be explored within the session.

Presenter Bios

Erin McCoy is the Coordinator of Library Services at Massasoit Community College and is passionate about creating sustainable information literacy instruction for as many students as possible.

Kay Neary is a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Massasoit community College and also serves as the academic liaison to the Humanities and Communication Arts Division. She is also the primary liaison to faculty for OER related questions and works closely with the Office of Online Learning to ensure smooth learning experiences for online students.
