Abstract

Abstract

Background: College students have a disproportionate rate of sexually transmitted infections. Sexually transmitted infections are preventable if sexual protection barriers are utilized with every sexual encounter. Barriers to using sexual protection include financial, availability, lack of understanding on risk, and confidentiality concerns.

Methods: This project was a program evaluation of the Barrier Express, which offers free and confidential access to sexual protection barriers. Anonymous surveys were emailed to college students enrolled in the fall semester of 2019 to evaluate their understanding of sexually transmitted infections, use of sexual protection barriers, awareness of services, and utilization of the program. Free distribution sites on campus were also monitored.

Results: Surveys were sent to all students and 106 of 1324 were returned. Ninety one percent indicated they had never utilized the Barrier Express, however counts at the distribution centers around campus showed students were taking the free barrier products provided.

Discussion: Students seemed to understand their risk of sexually transmitted infections but were not all aware of the campus free online ordering program on campus for sexual protection barriers. Free distribution sites on campus were more likely to be utilized in the residence halls and Athletic Training room, which will be continued by the college as well as more advertising for the online distribution program.
