Abstract
The reduction of a relativistic Hamiltonian to its effective nonrelativistic form, usually accomplished via a Foldy–Wouthuysen transformation, is derived via Lagrangian methods. This technique provides a pedagogically interesting introduction to the so-called heavy baryon field theory.
