Description
Visibility Management (VM) refers to the strategies that individuals use to regulate the degree to which they disclose traitsor characteristics that would otherwise be inconspicuous or invisible. The construct has been studied with gay/lesbian/bisexual individuals in the context of "coming out," and some have suggested that the phenomenon may be relevant to adoptive families. For example, how does one decide to disclose that s/he was adopted? How are the VM experiences of international adoption families different from those of domestic adoptions? This poster outlines a new research agenda designed to explore this line of inquiry. The poster will include a brief literature review, but will focus primarily on research questions and methodological considerations. The presenters, who have studied VM, look forward to collaborating with adoption scholars.
