Abstract
Zone refining is based on the fact that the solubility of a solute in a liquid solution will be different than its solubility in a solid solution. The ratio of the solute concentration in the solid solution to its concentration in the liquid is defined as the distribution coefficient. Thus, 1) k « c s / Ci where k is the distribution coefficient and Cs and Ci are the solute concentrations in the solid and liquid states.
