Defining sustainable tourism: a social constructionist view

The concept of sustainable tourism development has become the nucleus of academic research and practice alike. Collective advocacy of sustainability in tourism development policies by major global organizations has led many destinations and travel organizations to actively seek to adapt the concept. Sustainability is allied to almost all kinds of tourism activities and environments, but this multidimensionality also causes continuous criticism for the lack of universal structure. Discussions over the meaning of sustainable tourism are not new but the paradox of multifaceted interpretations persists. This study aims to outline themes and concepts that encompasses the meaning of sustainable tourism tourism in the perspective of the consumer through the approach of social constructionism.
