Abstract (150 Words)

Advances in digital technology and automation presents opportunities and challenges for tourism. This paper investigates the major digital technologies - including artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics - that will drive automation in the tourism industry and provides examples of their application in tourism enterprises. The findings are based on survey data from tourism stakeholders that was collected as part of industry consultation to develop a tourism digital workforce plan. Preliminary findings suggest that the self-rated level of digital literacy and knowledge about key digital technologies is mediocre, suggesting there is significant improvement needed through training and upskilling. This research also suggests that hardware and software development training and skills as well as technical skills to manage technology infrastructure are most important to industry. Opportunities for industry and academics to work together to bridge this gap is highlighted.
