Abstract (150 Words)

The purpose of this case study is to demonstrate how the New Orleans hospitality and tourism industry has continuously rebounded from crises and disasters throughout the 21st Century. The recovery was examined in the context of resilience, a term used to describe the ability to cope with or bounce back from a disaster. New Orleans’ resilience is evident in the continued strength of the destination’s image and the active management of the destination’s infrastructure by local governments; the effectiveness of destination marketing organizations; and support from local businesses and residents. Due to the frequency of crises and disasters, New Orleans has the playbooks and wherewithal to quickly pivot to achieve positive results in the recovery after a crisis or disaster. Besides illuminating these lessons which can aid other destinations as they anticipate and experience crises and disasters, too, we propose a fifth element, cultural resilience, to contribute to the literature.
