Abstract (150 Words)

Festivals and events, like many organizations in the tourism and hospitality industries, were deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As festival organizers scrambled to revise their event plans in response to changing restrictions they were faced with great uncertainty. Managing uncertainty is a complex work and has been examined from different perspectives; however, little has been written from the viewpoint of event and festival organizations. This study employed qualitative interviews with festival organizers from three North American Countries (Mexico, United States and Canada). Based on Uncertainty Management Theory, we conducted a thematic analysis where the main objective was to understand the lived experience in the perception of uncertainty over the course of the pandemic; which allowed us to explore appraisals of uncertainty. While the findings were based on experiences throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the knowledge gained may provide insight into dealing with uncertainty in various contexts.
