Eunjung Yang, Ph.D. – Post-doctoral Research Associate, Institute of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism, Utah State University

Dr. Yang’s academic training reflects a high degree of interdisciplinarity, combining a B.S. and M.S. in Geography, and a Ph.D. in Tourism Management. The overarching theme of Eunjung’s research agenda is sustainable tourism and community development. Her primary research goal is to shed light on the role of tourism in the creation of healthy, sustainable, and resilient communities to improve people’s quality of life. In addition, she is interested in applying geospatial methodologies to tourism and recreation to understand spatially varying phenomena and to predict future community resilience and quality of life.

Jinwon Kim, Ph.D. – Assistant Professor, University of Florida

Dr. Kim is a tourism/recreation/community geographer and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Tourism, Hospitality, and Event Management at the University of Florida, United States. He also serves as the Director of the UF Community Spatial Lab. Dr. Kim’s research goal is to identify the role of recreation, parks, and tourism in the creation of active, vibrant, healthy, sustainable, and resilient communities. His research interests include (1) community development, policy, and sustainability; (2) tourism geographies; and (3) location analysis and policy of tourism and business industry using GIS, spatial econometric models, and big data spatial analytics.

Abstract (150 Words)

Tourism significantly affects community resilience and community quality of life (QOL), ultimately supporting sustainable community development (SCD). Although there have been efforts to partially link tourism and community resilience, tourism and QOL, or community resilience and QOL, studies have barely considered the relationship between tourism, community resilience, and QOL together within a single framework. This study aims to develop an integrated SCD framework describing the mediating role of community resilience on the relationship between tourism clusters and community QOL. Specifically, this study adopted a spatial path analysis approach to comprehensively consider spatial interactions between communities. The key findings demonstrated that (1) community resilience spatially mediates the relationships between tourism clusters and QOL and (2) the mediating effect of community resilience varies depending on the type of tourism industries. These findings will help community practitioners understand complex mechanisms underlying the relationship between tourism, community resilience, and QOL and develop SCD plans.
