Author Bios (50 Words for each Author)

Dr. Alana Dillette is an Associate Professor in the Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at San Diego State University. Originally from the islands of The Bahamas, she is always trying to maintain her connection to home through research on sustainable tourism initiatives for small island states. Her other research interests include issues around diversity and inclusion, more specifically looking at the intersection between tourism, race, gender & ethnicity. Currently, she is working on research to gain a better understanding of the African-American travel experience.

Dr. Sandra Ponting is an Assistant Professor in the L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at San Diego State University. Dr. Ponting teaches lower and upper division undergraduate courses such as Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism Management, Service Leadership Development, and Hospitality Leadership and Self Development. Her research interests include emotional labor, industry professionalization, organizational identity change, and professional identity construction, all in the context of hospitality and tourism workforce development. She is passionate about assisting students with finding personally meaningful careers in the industry.

Abstract (150 Words)

Recently, there has been a growing trend of hospitality and tourism organizations putting forward diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statements and initiatives in response to the violent events involving racial hate in the United States. This research proposes a deep dive into what has happened, or not, with these DEI efforts. Guided by social movement theory, focus groups with hospitality and tourism leaders will assess current DEI status and devise a framework for social change.
