Abstract
This paper focuses on the writings by Italian filmmaker and novelist Lorenza Mazzetti in the Communist magazine Vie Nuove. I argue that during the 1960s Mazzetti used her articles as a form of criticizing conservative gender and family values within Communist rank-and-file, while also keeping a constant watch about attitudes and values by young Italians. Using a complex mix of Marxism, existentialism, and psychoanalysis, Mazzetti’s writings attacked the split between the personal and the political within Italian Communism’s political culture.
