Program Text

Tenor and librarian Peter W. Shea presented a concert of vocal chamber music entitled "Songs of Love and the Sea" on Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at the South Congregational Church on Fiddler's Green in Amherst, Mass. Shea was joined by three distinguished pianists, Monica Jakuc, Gretchen Saathoff and Susan Dedell, as well as a string quartet from southern Vermont. A music cataloger at the Du Bois Library at UMass Amherst, Shea presented this program as part of his sabbatical project on musical settings of the German/Jewish poet, Heinrich Heine. The songs on the concert were written for various combinations of voice, piano and strings, and each was based on one of the twelve poems in Heine's Die Nordsee, Erster Zyklus (The North Sea , First Cycle). The concert included several world premiere performances of works by area composers, including Willis Bridegam, David Kidwell, Kaeza Fearn and Zeke Hecker. Several selections were sung in English translation. The main document (in PDF format) contains the cover page, the concert program (with links for each song to a recording in MP3 format, full text and translation, notes on the composer, and scores or score excerpts), program notes, performer bios, and acknowledgements. The concert was followed by a reception in celebration of Heine's 208th birthday, which occured on the same day. The event was free and open to the public.
