The present status of spawning beds, other aspects of fish habitat, and fish ladders in Japanese streams were investigated. In responding to questionnaires, 466 commercial fishery cooperatives reported many problems they perceived as limiting fish production in highly engineered rivers. Field observations in several streams revealed projects that had been designed to rehabilitate riffles, pools, spawning areas, and streambanks. Measures are proposed for further improvement of stream habitat for fish.
