The TTRA 2024 Academic Program committee is excited to announce the first Call for Papers for the 54th Annual TTRA International Conference which will be held June 11 - 13, 2024 in Burlington, Vermont.

The theme for this year’s conference centers on Global Insights, Local Stories Shaping Tourism Research. In this spirit we invite you to submit abstracts that feature how your research generates insights that can inform the travel and tourism industry at the global or local (glocal) level. While we seek a diverse range of submissions, several related sub-themes to consider for your submission include:

  • Sustainability and stewardship
  • Visitor experience and value
  • Residents and community

In preparation for the 2024 TTRA International Conference, we are crafting sessions that showcase the synergy between academics and practitioners, emphasizing their joint efforts to propel research and leverage data to address challenges within the tourism industry. We invite abstract submissions showcasing instances of collaborative research between academics and practitioners. Particularly, we encourage submissions where both practitioners and academics can actively engage and participate in the presentation.

All abstracts should be 500 - 2500 words, should not be previously published, and can include work that is being developed, in progress, or completed. The TTRA International Conference offers many ways to share your research, including:

  1. Oral Presentation - Share your research in one of two ways:
    • In a 15 minute oral presentation accompanied by a slide deck or other medium (e.g., spoken word, documentary, ethno-drama, etc…)
    • In a conversational approach with a short introduction of your topic followed by small group conversation with session attendees
    • An award will be presented for the Best Oral Presentation.
  2. The Ideas Fair: Visual Presentation - Presented in person visually (as a poster, slideshow on a personal computer, or a combination) at the Ideas Fair event. The best presentation will be recognized with the Ideas Fair Winner Award. For further information and inspiration, please see here.
  3. Qualitative Research Methods Workshop - Presented in a non-traditional round table discussion format. The Qualitative Research Methods Workshop is a great opportunity to sharpen your skills in applying qualitative methods and analyzing qualitative data. Learn from your fellow tourism researchers during the research roundtables where presenters will share their qualitative methods and findings. These roundtables are designed to provide opportunities for attendees to learn from each other through discussion and engagement in a more intimate setting. In addition to the research roundtables this workshop features a conversation with experts on the use of qualitative research methods within the study of travel & tourism. The best submission will be recognized with the Qualitative Research Award.

Graduate students are encouraged to submit their work for consideration in any of the above formats. Graduate students serving as the primary presenter (as indicated in the ScholarWorks submission) will be featured in the conference program as Emerging Leaders and will have the opportunity to participate in Emerging Leader programming during the conference.

TTRA International highly values diversity, equity, and inclusion. We believe that having talented and dedicated diversity in gender, race, ethnicity, and chapter representation, along with varied skills, perspectives, and career experiences (including representatives from the academic community, practitioners working for DMOs, and vendor practitioners) contributes to a balanced and effective organization and conference. We ask that you consider this while crafting your submissions.

We encourage you to review the abstract template and guidelines for authors before making your submission on ScholarWorks.

Accepted authors may choose to have a full paper, full abstract, or shortened abstract included in the conference proceedings.
