A knowledge-based system for economical injection molding

Sheng-Ming Kuo, University of Massachusetts Amherst

Abstract

Knowledge concerning the design of parts for economical injection molding were obtained through extensive discussions with collaborating custom molders. This knowledge gas organized in the form of a coding system so that a systematic approach for analyzing injection molded parts could be achieved. The use of the system assist designers in avoiding costly to produce features. A database supporting the coding system was also developed. This database allots one to evaluate the quantitative effect of changing design attributes on relative cycle time. Finally, a relative cost model for injection molded parts was developed. This relative cost model enables one to compare design options in terms of total relative cost, and to determine the relative cost savings associated with design changes.
