Images of the Sudan: A cultural analysis of "The New York Times" and "The London Times" coverage of two crises

Abubaker Yasin Ahmed Al-Shingieti, University of Massachusetts Amherst

Abstract

This study is a cultural analysis of the images of the Sudan in The New York Times and The London Times coverage of two crises: the fall of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon in 1885 and the overthrow of Nimeiry in 1985. The study investigates the hegemony of images in foreign news coverage. It explores the nature and the origins of the images of the Sudan in these two newspapers as well as the operation of these images upon their subjects and the interests they serve. The analysis is both textual and contextual, quantitative and qualitative. First, a historical analysis which attempts to reconstruct the idea of the Sudan from Western writings is made. Second, content analysis is used to discern the overall pattern and emphasis in coverage. Third, selected news stories are analyzed as cultural narratives using Roland Barthes structural analysis of myth and Ricoeur's interpretation theory. Fourth the images of the Sudan in the news are put in context using Edward Said's conceptualization of Orientalism and Samir Amin's idea of Eurocentrism. Finally, the role of cultural criticism in the critique of Western representations of the "Other" is discussed.
