Firm dominance in food manufacturing

Yu Raymond Ma, University of Massachusetts Amherst

Abstract

The U.S. food and tobacco manufacturing sector is increasingly dominated by the largest food firms. The 100 largest food firms, out of a total of 15,000 firms, control 70% of the sector's value-added, with the percentage continuing to increase. This research explores the role of the largest firms in sector and market concentration. In addition, the structural characteristics of the product markets where the largest firms are most likely to participate are examined. This research updates the empirical evidence of large firm dominance in the U.S. food and tobacco manufacturing sector by: for the first time quantifying the relationship between aggregate concentration and market concentration in the sector; adding large firm involvement to the factors affecting changes in market concentration; and examining the structural characteristics associated with large firm dominance.
